Here's a summary of the activities over the past 24 hours: Last night we had folks working on the flier; today we had help from Progressive Cheverly in printing fliers and delivering them. Volunteers reached out to area businesses and posted updates to the blog and Facebook. Residents contacted their representatives and received updates from both Senator Harrington and Delegate Ramirez. The first wave of fliering at the Cheverly metro station started this afternoon, with more to follow.
Thank you to everyone who has assisted in this effort--what a great Cheverly outpouring of energy! Let's keep going through April 5, the last day for public comment!
Please join me tomorrow at 5:30 at the Cheverly metro station for the rally and pictures, followed by the public hearings!
The flier can be downloaded here--thanks to Progressive Cheverly.
If you have time to help flier, please let us know. Here's the current flier schedule--would be great if we could have two people for each shift:

Response from State Senator David Harrington
A fellow Cheverly resident received the following from Senator Harrington in response to her concerns about the Cheverly Metro situation:
Hi Katherine,
Hi Katherine,
Having received your message, I contacted the Secretary of Transportation and a member of the board of WMATA regarding the proposed weekend closure of the Cheverly and Morgan Blvd. metro stations. Initially, the Secretary of Transportation was unaware of any closure, but after further review she indicated that there is a proposal and that the department will fight it.
I also contacted one of the two Prince George's County WMATA board members, who indicated that there is no formal proposal, just a collection of staff brainstorming on ways to reduce expenditures. That staff list must be endorsed by the board, after which it would be a serious proposal.
The board member assured me that it was highly unlikely that the weekend Cheverly closure would move from proposal to actual practice. In addition, given the regional makeup of the boards and its practice that any regional board member can veto a proposed service reduction in its area, she further assured me that the Prince George's WMATA members would oppose such a closure.
I hope this is helpful in determining any strategy for addressing this situation. I will certainly work with the Secretary of Transportation and the WMATA board to resist and hopefully defeat any closure proposal.
Sincerely,
David Harrington

Subject: Updates on the Metro
Delegate Ivey and I have been in conversations with WMATA board members and MD Dept. of Transportation personnel, and we have strongly expressed our concerns about the weekend closings of the Cheverly Metro Station, as well as other transportation cuts. We have been informed that the weekend Cheverly Metro Station closings are only suggestions and that the closings are not likely to occur. However, we should continue fighting this issue until the final decision is set in stone. I believe that the community's activities will be the deciding factor.
Thanks,
Victor R.

100+ Members Joined the Facebook Group in under 24 Hours--Can you help us flier?
If you haven't already joined the Facebook group, you can do so here!
It's time to spread the word beyond Facebook, though, and contact those who use the Cheverly metro station. Can you help us flier during rush hour now through Friday evening? If yes--please leave a comment on the blog!
Can't get out but want to help? We need to reach out to area schools, businesses, and places of worship and need your help to do it! We also need help with printing costs, so leave a comment if you can provide assistance.
Thanks!

Subject: RE: Metro Ridership
Everybody,
I have had several fruitful conversations with WMATA officials throughout the day and they said they would try to get me the ridership information, along with more information about how they reached their projected savings, by tomorrow. They also stressed that the proposed budget cuts actually go further than are needed so the public input will play a large role in which cuts are carried out. We need to keep working on getting people to submit their comments online or in person. I spoke last night at the forum in Lanham, but was not able to get an e-mail out in time to mobilize Cheverly residents. The individuals I spoke with at WMATA ensured me that written testimony submitted to the website would be evenly weighed, but putting a face on the opposition is never bad.
In the coming days, probably early next week, I am working on organizing a meeting with town officials, WMATA and MDOT officials and other decision makers. I’m still in session and its very busy since there is just over a week to go, however I am going to try to pass out information at the Cheverly Metro on how to make a public comment in the coming days. I will keep you posted.

Here's an article that discusses the proposed cuts:
Metro wants public opinion on fare increases, service cuts
March 21, 2010 - 7:53pm
WASHINGTON - Metro is asking you to weigh in on proposals to close a $189 million budget gap.
Metro says the deficit is mostly because of increased expenses and revenue losses since less people rode the trains that was expected.
Metro has developed a list of proposals to close the gap and wants to get feedback on what riders want. The proposals are a combination of fare increase, service reductions, changes to the fare structure and service area for MetroAccess customers, layoffs, increased money from local jurisdictions that fund Metro and using capital funds.
The Board is also including suggestions from the Riders' Advisory Council, different rider groups, and a local union during the public hearings.
Any of the fare increases, service cuts and MetroAccess changes wouldn't take effect until June 27.
There's a online questionnaire you can fill out. It should take about 5-10 minutes to complete and those results will be put into a final report to Metro's Board in April.
You can also submit written comments by mailing them to the Office of the Secretary, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, 600 Fifth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20001 or emailing them to public-hearing-testimony@wmata.com. Metro's budget threatens to close the Cheverly metro station
WMATA 's proposed budget completely closes our Cheverly Metro on weekends. All three proposed weekend closures take place either in Southeast Washington or Prince George's County. The stops affected are Deanwood, Cheverly and Morgan Avenue. Obviously this would have a devastating impact on Cheverly and the surrounding areas.
Please spread the word and ask people to complete the survey and to send e-mail written testimony to public-hearing-testimony@wmata.com. Submissions must be received by 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 6.
